Joni Westerhouse, associate vice chancellor and associate dean in the Office of Medical Public Affairs at Washington University School of Medicine, has received the 2020 Distinguished Service Award from the Group on Institutional Advancement of the Association of American Medical Colleges.

Lan Yang, the Edwin H. & Florence G. Skinner Professor of Engineering at the McKelvey School of Engineering, has been elected a 2020 Fellow of the American Physical Society.

The Department of Pediatrics at Washington University School of Medicine has named pediatricians Vikas Dharnidharka, MD, and Margaret Lozovatsky, MD, to the newly created roles of vice chair of clinical investigation and vice chair of clinical informatics.

Julie K. Schwarz, MD, PhD, professor of radiation oncology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, has been elected vice president of the Radiation Research Society. She will go on to serve as president beginning in October 2022. 

John Whitaker, a master’s candidate in landscape architecture and advanced architectural design, has won an Award of Excellence from the American Society of Landscape Architects.

Washington University in St. Louis’ Equity and Inclusion Council is moving forward with 42 newly appointed members, who will attend a kickoff meeting Oct. 7.

A team of engineers and computer scientists at the McKelvey School of Engineering, along with multi-disciplinary collaborators at other institutions, will work over the next two years to prepare a proposal for one of the National Science Foundation’s National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Research Institutes.

Washington University’s Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship Lab, a joint initiative of the Brown School and Olin Business School, has been awarded a $200,000 grant from the Ewing Marion Kaufman Foundation to begin CAP STL, a project to explore how entrepreneurship affects equity and mobility.

David H. Gutmann, MD, PhD, the Donald O. Schnuck Family Professor and vice chair for research affairs in the Department of Neurology at Washington University School of Medicine, has received the George W. Jacoby Award from the American Neurological Association for his discoveries on the role of the immune system in brain tumors.
