The Women’s Bakery, which provides access to education and employment for women in East Africa through the building of bakeries, won Washington University in St. Louis’ 2018 Global Impact Award on Oct. 29. 

Lei Liu, professor of biostatistics at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, has been elected a fellow of the American Statistical Association, the country’s preeminent professional statistical society.

Keith Hengen, assistant professor of biology in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, was selected by the Allen Institute as a 2018 Next Generation Leader. Hengen is one of six early-career neuroscientists who will participate in a special advisory council for the Allen Institute for Brain Science.

Erin McGlothlin, associate professor of German, and Anika Walke, assistant professor of history, both in Arts & Sciences, served as conference hosts for “Lessons and Legacies,” the premier intellectual gathering in Holocaust studies.

Brian Froelke, MD, of Washington University School of Medicine, has been recognized by the EveryLife Foundation for Rare Diseases as a state legislative advocate for patients with rare diseases.

Christine Pham, MD, professor of medicine and of pathology and immunology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, has been named director of the Division of Rheumatology in the Department of Medicine.

Walter R. Bosch, DSc, associate professor of radiation oncology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, has been elected a fellow of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine. He was recognized for, among other contributions, his work involving data standards and interoperable exchange of radiotherapy information.

Maren Loe (left), a third-year medical and doctoral student, and Arghavan Salles, MD, PhD,  assistant professor of surgery, both at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, have received a $10,000 grant from the American Medical Association to study gender bias in medical education. 

A team of five students in Olin Business School’s data analytics program prevailed over 44 other teams, taking first place in a global competition with a project that provided the National Multiple Sclerosis Society invaluable insight about its annual fundraising bike race.

Gerald Early, the Merle Kling Professor of Modern Letters in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, will receive the 2018 Tradition of Literary Excellence Award Oct. 27.
