Arts & Sciences starts the fall semester with a new program director and four new departmental chairs, two of whom are heading newly created and reorganized departments.The Department of Asian and Near Eastern Languages and Literatures (ANELL) and the programs in East Asian Studies (EAS) and Jewish and Islamic Studies (JINES) have been reorganized into two full-fledged departments.

Washington University Libraries and the St. Louis Poetry Center will present a program featuring the works of renowned American poet Elizabeth Bishop at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23, in Wilson Hall, Room 214, on Washington University’s Danforth Campus. A reception will follow in the Ginkgo Reading Room in the nearby Olin Library. The event is free and open to the public.

A new program coordinated through the First Year Center encourages faculty members to share outside interests as a way of introducing freshmen to the city of St. Louis.As part of “St. Louis by the Dozen,” faculty members lead groups of 12 in an off-campus weekend adventure.

Washington University in St. Louis will host a university-wide Public Service Fair at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, in College Hall on the South 40. The event features more than 30 nonprofit organizations offering a variety of community service and internship opportunities.

Washington University in St. Louis, along with two other organizations, is getting behind BioSTL (evolved from the Coalition for Plant and Life Sciences), a new regional organization to champion St. Louis bioscience. The university, BJC HealthCare, and the St. Louis Life Sciences Project have each committed $2 million per year for five years to the venture, for a combined total of $30 million. The announcement of the funding, which will forward bioscience company creation and drive economic growth in St. Louis, was made Sept. 27.

The Washington University Students for International Collaboration on the Environment (WUSICE) recently was granted the opportunity send the first WUSTL delegation to the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP17). The group is in the process of building an effective interdisciplinary delegation of undergraduate and graduate students. WUSICE is seeking students from a variety of backgrounds who have an interest in international environmental negotiations. Deadline is Thursday, Sept. 29.

Woman’s Club members Risa Zwerling Wrighton hosted the luncheon to introduce women new to the university to the Woman’s Club. The club offers members opportunities to form friendships and grow intellectually through luncheons, lectures, tours and programs.

James E. McLeod, vice chancellor for students and dean of the College of Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, will be remembered by the university community in a memorial service set for 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9. McLeod died Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2011, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital of kidney failure after a two-year battle with cancer. He was 67.

At its fall meeting Sept. 23, the Board of Trustees heard a number of presentations by top university officials, including a report on the Washington University endowment by Kimberly G. Walker, chief investment officer; a student housing and off-campus development planning update from Executive Vice Chancellor Henry S. Webber; and a presentation on the new Preston M. Green Hall by Ralph S. Quatrano, PhD, dean of the School of Engineering & Applied Science and the Spencer T. Olin Professor.

Weekday $5 lunch specials are returning to the Bear’s Den on the South 40 this academic year. The specials, which are offered at each Bear’s Den eatery open during lunch, are available from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday-Friday. New this year is a $5 special at Paws & Go: a cup of soup, half sandwich and a fountain drink.
