First Taste of St. Louis Service Fair Oct. 5
Washington University in St. Louis will host a university-wide Public Service Fair at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, in College Hall on the South 40. The event features more than 30 nonprofit organizations offering a variety of community service and internship opportunities.
BioSTL gets boost from WUSTL
Washington University in St. Louis, along with two other organizations, is getting behind BioSTL (evolved from the Coalition for Plant and Life Sciences), a new regional organization to champion St. Louis bioscience. The university, BJC HealthCare, and the St. Louis Life Sciences Project have each committed $2 million per year for five years to the venture, for a combined total of $30 million. The announcement of the funding, which will forward bioscience company creation and drive economic growth in St. Louis, was made Sept. 27.
WUSTL to send delegation to UN Climate Change conference
The Washington University Students for International Collaboration on the Environment (WUSICE) recently was granted the opportunity send the first WUSTL delegation to the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP17). The group is in the process of building an effective interdisciplinary delegation of undergraduate and graduate students. WUSICE is seeking students from a variety of backgrounds who have an interest in international environmental negotiations. Deadline is Thursday, Sept. 29.
Woman’s Club welcome to WUSTL

The club offers members opportunities to form friendships and grow intellectually through luncheons, lectures, tours and programs.
Memorial set for James McLeod
James E. McLeod, vice chancellor for students and dean of the College of Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, will be remembered by the university community in a memorial service set for 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9. McLeod died Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2011, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital of kidney failure after a two-year battle with cancer. He was 67.
Trustees meet, dedicate Preston M. Green Hall
At its fall meeting Sept. 23, the Board of Trustees heard a number of presentations by top university officials, including a report on the Washington University endowment by Kimberly G. Walker, chief investment officer; a student housing and off-campus development planning update from Executive Vice Chancellor Henry S. Webber; and a presentation on the new Preston M. Green Hall by Ralph S. Quatrano, PhD, dean of the School of Engineering & Applied Science and the Spencer T. Olin Professor.
Weekday $5 lunch specials return to Bear’s Den
Weekday $5 lunch specials are returning to the Bear’s Den on the South 40 this academic year. The specials, which are offered at each Bear’s Den eatery open during lunch, are available from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday-Friday. New this year is a $5 special at Paws & Go: a cup of soup, half sandwich and a fountain drink.
Eat Local Challenge meals offered on Danforth Campus Sept. 27
Danforth Campus eateries will offer meals made entirely of local food — with the exception of salt — Tuesday, Sept. 27, as part of WUSTL Dining Services’ Eat Local Challenge. Ingredients for Eat Local Challenge meals will come from farmers and artisans within 150 miles of WUSTL.
First-Year Reading Program contest winners announced
Nearly 50 first-year students at Washington University in St. Louis created their own chapter to the novel The Cellist of Sarajevo, as part of the First-Year Reading Program Contest. Five contest winners were treated to lunch with author Steven Galloway, including Juliet Kinder, who won the grand prize and a $250 gift certificate to the Washington University Campus Store.
A bubbling good time
Tekno Bubbles employee Tim Tatz hands out bubble soap to children during the Family Learning Center’s one-year anniversary celebration Sept. 16 at the center on the North Campus. The event for the center’s parents and children featured a bubble artist, bounce house, face painter, children’s entertainer and more.
