College of Arts & Sciences’ dean search committee announced
Gary S. Wihl, PhD, dean of the faculty of Arts & Sciences, has appointed an eight-member committee to identify candidates for the position of dean of the College of Arts & Sciences. James E. McLeod, longtime dean of the College of Arts & Sciences and vice chancellor for students, died Sept. 6. Wolfram Schmidgen, PhD, associate professor of English in Arts & Sciences, has been appointed chair of the search committee.
Recycle holiday lights at WUSTL
This holiday season, the WUSTL community can bring burned out or unwanted light strings to campus to be recycled. WUSTL’s Office of Sustainability is partnering with StLouisGreen.com and Operation Food Search on the initiative, which runs Nov. 21-Jan. 17 at the School of Medicine and Nov. 16-Jan. 31 at all other WUSTL campuses.
Career Center takes operation on the road
This winter break, the Career Center is providing all WUSTL students with several opportunities to network with industry professionals and interview for jobs and internships in cities across the country. To take advantage of these opportunities, students need to sign up or apply by Monday, Nov. 28.
WUSTL exceeds 2011 United Way goal
Thanks to the generosity of Washington University’s faculty, staff and retirees, thousands in the St. Louis community will receive hot meals, job training and warm clothes for the winter. The WUSTL community has raised more than $686,000 in its United Way of Greater St. Louis campaign, surpassing the university’s stated goal of $650,000.
Football university
WUSTL international students recently learned the intracacies of Amercian football in a workshop organized by the Office of International Students and put on by Bears football player Jonathan Paramore. The main goal was to give students enough basic knowledge so they could enjoy games with their American peers.
Campus Y kicks off annual support campaign Nov. 17
The Campus Y at Washington University is celebrating its 100th year on campus in 2011 and kicking off its “Strong Community Campaign” from 4:30-6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, at Whittemore House. The celebration is open to the public. The annual campaign helps support 28 community service programs. More than 900 students and 92 student leaders are involved with these programs.
Sagel, professor of radiology, 71
Stuart S. Sagel, MD, professor of radiology and former director of the chest radiology section at the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology, died Friday, Nov. 11, 2011, of leukemia. He was 71.
Voice mail changes at the School of Medicine
Telecommunications Facilities Corp. (TFC) is currently working to replace the voice mail system used by the School of Medicine. In preparation for the Nov. 18-20 change, employees are asked to make some changes before Friday, Nov.18 at 9 a.m.
WUSTL’s Diwali: A fusion of cultures
The WashU Bhangra team performs at Edison Theatre this past weekend as part of the Diwali “Festival of Lights” celebration. Ashoka, the university’s South Asian student association, presents the annual event, one of the largest student-run productions on campus.
