Should weather conditions create potentially hazardous travel conditions, Washington University will evaluate the situation and take into consideration the safety of the faculty, staff and students as well as the services that must be provided despite the severe weather. In the unlikely event that WUSTL alters the normal work and/or class schedule, an announcement will be posted on the university’s home page (wustl.edu), and a number of media outlets also will air an announcement.

WUSTL senior Ashley D. Brosius and Fidel Desir, a 2010 graduate of WUSTL, were finalists for Rhodes Scholarships. Brosius and Desir were among 210 finalists from across the United States for the scholarship for graduate study at the University of Oxford in England. Rhodes Scholars are selected on the basis of their undergraduate academic achievements, personal integrity, leadership potential and physical vigor.

The following are among the new faculty members at Washington University: Joseph Cullen, PhD; Amr Farahat, PhD; Exequiel Hernández, PhD; Baojun Jiang, PhD; Ping C. Lieser, PhD; Asaf Manela, PhD; Matthew Ringgenberg, PhD; and Adina Sterling, PhD. Others will be introduced periodically.

Parinaz Massoumzadeh, PhD, staff scientist in the Department of Radiology, was one of eight American women chosen to participate in a U.S.-Brazil exchange program to recruit, retain and advance women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

These days, there’s a lot of buzz about high school students needing to prepare for a global environment. An Nov. 29 panel discussion seeks to offer students some concrete guidelines as they make the transition to college. The event primarily targets all area high school students, but it also is geared toward parents and teachers.

The Campus Store will give WUSTL faculty and staff members an opportunity to do some early holiday shopping. The store will hold its 14th annual Faculty/Staff Appreciation Event Wednesday, Nov. 30, and will offer a 30 percent discount to Washington University faculty and staff members from 3-8 p.m.

The annual event is held to help keep those living in neighborhoods surrounding WUSTL informed on university happenings and also to give neighbors a forum to voice comments and concerns to a panel of university administrators.

WUSTL Dining Services is providing a traditional Thanksgiving meal for students who will be staying in St. Louis for the holiday. The buffet with turkey and all the trimmings will be offered from 11:45 a.m.-2 p.m. Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 24, at College Hall in the South 40 House.
