Kent Theiling Jr., grounds and landscape design manager for the Danforth Campus, will lead a Spring Arbor Tour Wednesday, March 21. The guided tour will start at 11 a.m. at the Beaumont Pavilion in Brookings Quadrangle and is expected to last approximately an hour. The tour will take participants on a walk throughout the Danforth Campus to learn more about the different kind of trees located on campus.

Spring break begins this weekend, and, as students and faculty take a mid-March break, so does the daily Record e-mail. The Record will publish once next week on Wednesday, March 14, then resume regular five-day-per-week publication Monday, March 19. Bon Appetit, the food service company that manages WUSTL Dining Services, has announced its new farm animal welfare policy. The changes will affect meat, poultry and eggs served at WUSTL Dining Services locations. Under the new standards, Bon Appetit will employ the food service industry’s most comprehensive farm animal welfare policy to date, says Nadeem Siddiqui, director of WUSTL Dining Services.

Do you swim, bike and run? Register now for the 3rd Annual Washington University Sprint Triathlon to be held at 9 a.m. Sunday, April 1, on the WUSTL campus and in Forest Park.

WUSTL will test its emergency communication systems three times in March: at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday, March 14; and at noon Wednesday, March 21. The tests will take place unless there is the potential for severe weather that day or some other emergency is occurring at that time. The drills are being held in conjunction with Missouri Severe Weather Awareness Week March 12-16.

Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton has announced two senior leadership appointments. Jennifer R. Smith, PhD, associate professor of earth and planetary sciences and of environmental studies, both in Arts & Sciences, has been named dean of the College of Arts & Sciences. Sharon Stahl, PhD, associate vice chancellor for students and dean of the First Year Center, has been named vice chancellor for students. They will fill the dual roles held by James E. McLeod before his death Sept. 6.

The annual Architecture & Design Career Fair will take place from 3-7 p.m. Thursday, March 22, in Steinberg Hall lobby. Students and alumni will have the opportunity to meet with top architecture firms, as well as professional and trade organizations. Architects also will be on hand to review student and alumni portfolios.

“Faces of Hope,” an event celebrating Washington University’s community partnership and impact, will be held at 4:30 p.m. Monday, March 26, in Danforth University Center, Room 276. The entire campus community is invited to this interactive poster session and networking reception highlighting WUSTL’s community engagement.

A three-phase construction project will bring the Gephardt Institute for Public Service into the Danforth University Center (DUC) and consolidate student media groups on campus. The Gephardt Institute and key student media — including Student Life, WUTV and KWUR 90.3 FM — will be grouped on the center’s third floor adjacent to the DUC Recording Studio. Construction begins March 19.

Two members of Team North prepare a meal during the Feb. 28 North vs. South Champion Chef Competition. The competition pitted Team North — representing The Village, Millbrook Apartments and off-campus housing — against Team South, representing the South 40. For the competition, WUSTL Dining Services chefs paired up with students to produce the tastiest dishes that also followed the ChooseMyPlate.gov and Connie’s Choice guidelines for healthy eating.
