Amanda Moore McBride, PhD, associate dean of the Brown School, was on hand Nov. 11 to congratulate two Brown School students on receiving commissions in the United States Air Force as part of the Air Force Health Professions Scholarship Program. The Brown School was the only school with two recipients — only 11 were given nationwide out of 152 applicants. “The military is the No. 1 employer of social workers, and this is real tribute to both our students and the Brown School that it has found the best and the brightest right here,” McBride said.

In celebration of Geography Awareness Week, the Data and GIS Services unit at Washington University Libraries, is hosting lectures, workshops and the GIS (Geographic Information Systems) Challenge Nov. 18-22.

Holobaugh Honors is an annual LGBTQIA community recognition and awards ceremony that honors undergraduate and graduate Washington University students, staff, faculty and area community members who have contributed to LGBTQIA visibility, equality and community.

The Summer Programs and Conference Services office invites faculty and staff members to consider Washington University in St. Louis’ Danforth Campus as a site for their organizations’ summer conferences.

Nominations are now open for the Gephardt Institute for Public Service’s Civic Scholars Program. The program now consists of both a classic and a study abroad cohort. Faculty, staff and administrators can nominate sophomores for either group here. The nomination deadline is Dec. 2.

Religion & Politics, the online news journal of the John C. Danforth Center on Religion & Politics at Washington University in St. Louis, won the Gerald A. Renner Enterprise Religion Report of the Year Award at the Religion Newswriters Association’s annual awards ceremony in Austin, Texas.

This holiday season, the Washington University in St. Louis community can bring burned-out or unwanted light strings to campus to be recycled. WUSTL’s Office of Sustainability and the Sustainability Action Team at the School of Medicine are partnering with StLouisGreen.com and Operation Food Search on the initiative, which runs Nov. 16-Jan. 12.

Daniel E. Feder, JD, has been named managing director of private markets at Washington University Investment Management Co. (WUIMC) — the investment office for the endowment at Washington University in St. Louis. As a senior member of the WUIMC, Feder will play a key role in the overall management of WUSTL’s endowment and other university assets, which were valued at $6.2 billion at the end of the 2013 fiscal year. His appointment is effective Dec. 2.

This spring, Washington University students may take a variety of Semester Online courses ranging from Trinity College Dublin’s “Ireland and Rebellion” to Wake Forest’s “Introduction to Bioethics.” The online consortium now boasts 21 top peer institutions.
