The Gephardt Institute for Civic and Community Engagement at Washington University in St. Louis has awarded $30,000 in Transform Grants to five student projects that will advance regional priorities.

Washington University in St. Louis continues to play a vital role in the local economy, providing jobs, supporting local businesses and drawing millions in research dollars to the region. During fiscal year 2023, the university’s direct and indirect contributions to the St. Louis economy were $8.8 billion. WashU also supported 54,380 jobs in the region. 

A team of Olin Business School professors, students and staff helped four local entrepreneurs win 2023 Arch Grants. With this year’s competition underway, they are again providing applicants with valuable feedback. The deadline to submit application materials for review is March 3.

For years, Gateway STEM High School students have read Pulitzer Prize-winning climate journalist Elizabeth Kolbert. On Feb. 12, they got to meet her at a special science storytelling program at Washington University in St. Louis. The event was sponsored by WashU’s Climate Across Curriculum program, which connects Gateway STEM in St. Louis Public Schools to faculty experts, campus tours and learning resources.

About 40 engineering and occupational therapy students collaborated during Washington University in St. Louis’ inaugural Assistive Tech Make-A-Thon, designing products for St. Louisans with mobility and other physical challenges.

A tradition for more than two decades, the Greater St. Louis Marathon returns April 27 with a new name, a new course and new pre- and post-run events. The race also has a new partner: Washington University in St. Louis, which is offering employees and students discounted registration fees.

Participation in a STEM apprenticeship program increased job happiness, finds a new study from the Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis.

The Center for the Humanities in Arts & Sciences will launch “Humanities at Work: Graduate Internships for the Next Generation.” Supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the program aims to prepare doctoral candidates for a wider range of career pathways.

Members of the Greenwood Cemetery Preservation Association will receive the annual Rosa L. Parks Award during the university’s Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15, at Graham Chapel. 

A committee comprised of WashU faculty and staff, along with key community partners, is working to identify the Confluence Collaborative’s inaugural faculty executive director.
