United Way of Greater St. Louis has named Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton as a co-chair of its 2018 community campaign. He will serve alongside co-chair Jeff Fox, chairman and CEO of Harbour Group, for the annual fundraiser.

John O. Holloszy, MD, whose research at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis led to advances in the understanding of the body’s response to exercise, died July 18, 2018, at a nursing home in Town and Country, Mo., following a long battle with kidney disease. He was 85.

Allison King, whose mom worked in a renal lab at the School of Medicine, grew up in and around Washington University. Now, this associate professor of occupational therapy, of pediatrics and of medicine is a leading national expert on sickle cell disease in children and young adults.

Mickey and Debbie Stern, longtime supporters of Washington University in St. Louis, have made a $1 million commitment to the Gephardt Institute for Civic and Community Engagement. The gift will support the Civic Scholars Program, a key Gephardt initiative that prepares undergraduate students to be civic leaders.

Andrew D. Martin, dean of the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts at the University of Michigan, has been appointed the 15th chancellor of Washington University in St. Louis, effective June 1, 2019, according to Craig D. Schnuck, chair of the university’s Board of Trustees.

Nicole Hudson, deputy mayor for racial equity and priority initiatives for the City of St. Louis, has been appointed assistant vice chancellor for the newly created Academy for Diversity and Inclusion at Washington University, effective Aug. 27.
