Cindy Lynn Norman, business office operations supervisor at the Brown School, died in her sleep on July 15, 2020. She was 50. Norman had worked at Washington University for 26 years.

Nancy Rubin, longtime administrative assistant in the Department of Art History & Archaeology in Arts & Sciences, died of cardiac arrest June 27 at St. John’s Mercy Hospital in St. Louis. She was 58.

The Trump administration on Tuesday quickly rescinded the July 6 policy directive that would have prohibited international students from being in the United States if all of their classes were online. Washington University supported a lawsuit filed by Harvard and MIT challenging the policy.

To help address the international social, economic and public health ramifications of the COVID-19 pandemic, the McDonnell International Scholars Academy recently awarded seed grants to kick-start research projects led by Washington University faculty members and their international collaborators.

Adrienne Davis and Joan Luby will receive Washington University in St. Louis’ 2020 faculty achievement awards, Chancellor Andrew D. Martin announced. Also, Douglas F. Covey will be honored for innovation.

Joe Goldberg, owner of TruFusion STL fitness studio on the West Campus of Washington University in St. Louis, was facing financial devastation when he asked the university if he could move the gym’s yoga, cycling, bootcamps and other classes to the university’s open-air garage. The university immediately approved Goldberg’s proposal and helped him execute the plan.

Ranen Miao, a rising sophomore studying political science and sociology in Arts & Sciences, has been named a Point Foundation national scholar. The honor supports outstanding lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer student leaders. 

Leon E. Ashford, an early advocate for first-generation and Black students at Washington University in St. Louis, died March 28, 2020. He was 90. Ashford worked for the university for 39 years, retiring in 1995 as director of Student Educational Services, a precursor to The Learning Center. 

Americans across the nation are documenting today’s protests through photography and video, often posting their content on Instagram, Twitter and other social media platforms. But is that the safest way to preserve these historic images? Miranda Rectenwald, curator of local history at University Libraries at Washington University in St. Louis, created a list of resources to help protest participants preserve their content for the long term. 

Starting July 1, Washington University in St. Louis will offer its students, faculty and staff a new, free phone-based app designed to address and promote personal safety both on and off campus. WashU Safe replaces Noonlight and offers enhanced security features.
