Though far from campus, 916 international students are finding new ways to connect to the Washington University in St. Louis community. Faculty members have established special discussion sections and office hours, schools are recruiting mentors and students are creating their own support networks in their home countries.

Hedwig Lee, professor of sociology in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, has been named co-director of the Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity & Equity (CRE²) at Washington University. Lee had served as one of the center’s associate directors since its beginning in 2019. 

Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis faculty members Randall J. Bateman, MD, Michael S. Diamond, MD and Scott Hultgren have been elected fellows of the National Academy of Inventors, the highest professional distinction accorded solely to academic inventors.

James Fitzpatrick, professor of neuroscience and of cell biology and physiology at the School of Medicine and director of the Washington University Center for Cellular Imaging, is one of 22 researchers worldwide named a Chan Zuckerberg Imaging Scientist by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.

The School of Medicine’s eastern border will look strikingly different in 2023, when the 11-story neuroscience research building is complete. At this point, more than 106 drilled concrete piers have been poured, and the interior columns and floor in the basement’s western half are complete.

Washington University’s International Travel Oversight Committee recently updated international travel policies, which will extend through the upcoming spring 2021 semester.

The university Society of Professors Emeriti group will hold its regular monthly meeting at 12:30 p.m. Dec. 14 via Zoom. Judith W. Mann, curator of European Art to 1800 at the Saint Louis Art Museum, will discuss the work of artist Sebastiano Luciani.

Jerome F. Brasch, emeritus trustee of Washington University in St. Louis, died Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2020. He was 95.

David H. Gutmann, MD, PhD, the Donald O. Schnuck Family Professor at Washington University School of Medicine, is a recipient of the 2020 Neuro-oncology Scientific Award from the American Academy of Neurology. The award recognizes singular scientific achievement that has advanced the field of neuro-oncology.
