This year’s Day of Dialogue and Action sessions will be held virtually March 29 and 30. They will address the university’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sabrina M. Brown, former interim executive director of academic engagement at Harris-Stowe State University, has been appointed director of the Deneb STARS program at Washington University in St. Louis, according to Anna Gonzalez, vice chancellor for student affairs.

Washington University will hold its 35th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 17. Arts & Sciences’ John Baugh will deliver the keynote address at the virtual event. The School of Medicine will host a week of programs and service opportunities, including a talk by Jonathan Metzl, author of “Dying of Whiteness.”

Washington University in St. Louis is part of a newly formed coalition designed to reduce racial, economic and spatial inequities in the St. Louis region.

Afrobeat, Spanish dance, Ukrainian multi-instrumentalists and contemporary Son jarocho and Afro-Mexican music. Next spring, WashU’s Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity & Equity (CRE2) and Department of Music will partner with The Sheldon to present the fourth annual Whitaker World Music Series.

The Holobaugh Honors will celebrate Washington University community members for their advocacy for and service to LGBTQIA* communities. The ceremony will take place Nov. 11.

Calvin Lai in Arts & Sciences received a nearly $350,000 grant, part of $33 million allotted by the Department of Justice to improve community policing.

Jonathan Barnes and Richard Loomis, both in the Department of Chemistry in Arts & Sciences, won a four-year $90,000 grant from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation for the recruitment and retention of underrepresented graduate students in chemistry’s doctoral program.

The Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity & Equity has launched a new podcast, “Everywhere with CRE².” The podcast plans to explore research from center faculty and fellows and dive deep into issues affecting St. Louis and the world.

The Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity & Equity is accepting applications for funding opportunities. Faculty affiliates are invited to design a new graduate-level seminar for the 2022-23 academic year. The deadline is Oct. 15.
