Arts & Sciences recently recognized five alumni for their achievements, service and commitment to the liberal arts during its Distinguished Alumni Awards dinner.

The Gephardt Institute recently celebrated this year’s Gerry and Bob Virgil Ethic of Service Award honorees. The award recognizes WashU community members whose efforts reflect their, and the university’s, commitment to St. Louis.

Ursula W. Goodenough, a professor emerita of biology, and William B. McKinnon, a professor of earth and planetary sciences, both in Arts & Sciences, have been elected to the National Academy of Sciences. Election to the academy, announced May 2, is considered one of the highest honors that can be awarded to a U.S. scientist or engineer.

The Skandalaris Center awarded more than $75,000 in funding to WashU startups through its annual Innovation and Entrepreneurship Awards ceremony April 19.

The new St. Louis Confluence Award recognizes and elevates the strength and impact of the work led by community-minded researchers, their partners and university collaborators. The inaugural recipient is the Brown School’s Matthew Kreuter.

Ian Dobbins, a professor of psychological and brain sciences in Arts & Sciences, has been named a 2023 fellow of the Society of Experimental Psychologists.

The 40th annual Brown School Awards of Distinction were presented April 13 at City Foundry STL. The event honored e​ight individuals who work t​o create positive change for people around the globe.

Dayna S. Early, MD, a professor at the School of Medicine, will receive the 2023 Distinguished Endoscopic Research Mentoring Award from the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

Ning Zhang, an assistant professor of computer science and engineering at the McKelvey School of Engineering, received a National Science Foundation CAREER award to address threats to the availability of cyber-physical systems, like the systems behind self-driving cars or energy production pipelines.

Patrick White, MD, PhD, director of the Division of Palliative Medicine in the Department of Medicine at the School of Medicine, has been selected to receive the 2023 Josefina B. Magno Distinguished Hospice Physician Award from the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine.
