Singer. Writer. Performer. Visual artist. Over the course of her 45-year career, Patti Smith has established herself as one of the most prolific and influential artists of her generation. In fall 2020, Smith will receive the International Humanities Prize from Washington University in St. Louis.

The Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis has received a $40,000 grant from the Art Works program of the National Endowment for the Arts.

Nancy Berg, professor of Hebrew language and literature in the Department of Jewish, Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies in Arts & Sciences, has won a National Jewish Book Award for best anthology for the 2018 book “What We Talk About When We Talk About Hebrew (and What It Means to Amer­i­cans).”

Photographer Jennifer Colten, senior lecturer in the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, and Paul Tran, a senior poetry fellow in the Writing Program in Arts & Sciences, both at Washington University in St. Louis, have won 2019 Artist Fellowships from the Regional Arts Commission of St. Louis.

Jhan Salazar, a graduate student in biology in Arts & Sciences, was recognized by the Colombian organization Color de Colombia as the “Afro-Colombian of the Year” in the youth category in a nationally televised ceremony in Colombia on Dec. 2.

Dana Levy, an internationally renowned artist whose work frequently explores tensions between the man-made and natural worlds, has been appointed the 2019-20 Henry L. and Natalie E. Freund Teaching Fellow at Washington University in St. Louis. The fellowship, jointly sponsored by the Saint Louis Art Museum and the university’s Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, is designed to promote the creation and exhibition of contemporary art as well as the teaching of contemporary art principles.

A review in the Journal of Affordable Housing and Community Development Law highlights the impact of “Facing Segregation: Housing Policy Solutions for a Stronger Society,” a book edited by Washington University’s Molly W. Metzger and Henry S. Webber.

The book “Recipes for Respect: African American Meals and Meaning”(2019) by Rafia Zafar, professor of English and of African-American studies, both in Arts & Sciences, is featured in a new exhibition celebrating the 125th anniversary of the New York Public Library.

Two faculty and two alumni from the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts are among the winners of InSITE 2020, a temporary public art exhibition organized by the Downtown STL Public Art Initiative.

New York’s acclaimed Momenta String Quartet will perform a new work by Washington University’s own Christopher Stark, along with pieces by Roberto Sierra and György Ligeti, Nov. 17 in the 560 Music Center.
