Katharine Flores, a renowned materials scientist who develops new complex metallic alloys and advanced manufacturing techniques, was recently installed as the Christopher I. Byrnes Professor of Engineering.

At the Washington University in St. Louis Board of Trustees meeting Dec. 2, several faculty members were granted tenure. Their new roles took effect Dec. 2.

Brett Wick, a professor of mathematics and statistics in Arts & Sciences, , has been appointed Dean’s Fellow for Digital Transformation.

Janet S. Lee, MD, a highly regarded physician-scientist in pulmonary and critical care medicine, has been chosen to lead the Division of Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine in the Department of Medicine at the School of Medicine. Her appointment is effective Jan. 3.

Erik Herzog, a professor of biology, was installed as the Viktor Hamburger Distinguished Professor in Arts & Sciences. His talk was titled “For Whom the Bells Toll: Networked Circadian Clocks and Clock Watchers.”

David Valentine-Elam has been named the inaugural chief privacy officer at Washington University, announced Monica Allen, vice chancellor and general counsel. In his role, Valentine-Elam works to ensure that the information of students, faculty, staff and research participants is protected.
