Jim Brock and Kevin Hammerschmidt began their college careers with the Washington University Prison Education Project. This spring, both were among the first PEP alumni to earn their bachelor’s degrees on the Danforth Campus.

Washington University is ending its Doctor of Liberal Arts (DLA) program in University College, administrators announced this week. The university has been reimagining University College with an eye to shifting its focus to serve the St. Louis region and provide continuing education.

Jean Allman and Lilianna Solnica-Krezel will receive Washington University’s 2021 faculty achievement awards, Chancellor Andrew D. Martin announced. Also, Aaron DiAntonio and Jeffrey Milbrandt, at the School of Medicine, will be recognized for innovation and entrepreneurship.

McKelvey School of Engineering labs couldn’t shut down due to COVID-19. Megan Flake kept them running smoothly while research was on hold.

Chancellor Andrew D. Martin and four other faculty members of Washington University were elected members of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, the academy announced April 22. The others are Deanna Barch, John Baugh, Pascal Boyer and Holden Thorp. Founded in 1780, the academy honors exceptional scholars, leaders, artists and innovators.

Washington University’s Prison Education Project has won a two-year, $980,000 grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The award resulted from the Mellon Foundation’s “Future of Higher Learning in Prison” competition.

Washington University in St. Louis’ International Travel Oversight Committee recently announced that its international travel policies in place this spring will extend through July 2021.
