Alvitta Ottley, assistant professor at the McKelvey School of Engineering, recently received the Young Researcher and Best Short Paper awards at the EuroVis annual visualization conference. The awards recognize Ottley’s research in creating personalized and adaptive visualization systems.

The American Society of Hematology has honored John Atkinson, MD, the Samuel Grant Professor of Medicine at Washington University School of Medicine, for his significant contributions to the field of hematology.

The American Heart Association has recognized the McKelvey School of Engineering’s Jonathan Silva with its Established Investigator Award. The five-year $400,000 award will support his work into precision medicine for patients with irregular heartbeat.

Timothy J. Ley, MD, at the School of Medicine, has been honored by the American Society of Hematology with the Henry Stratton Medal for outstanding contributions to hematology. Ley also recently was honored by France’s Fondation ARC for cancer research.

Michael J. Holtzman, MD, the Selma and Herman Seldin Professor of Medicine and director of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the School of Medicine, received a $2.5 million grant from the Department of Defense for work toward a novel drug to treat lung disease.

Panos Kouvelis, at Olin Business School, is the 2022 recipient of the Manufacturing and Service Operations Management Society’s Distinguished Fellow Award, widely regarded as the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a research scholar in the field of operations management.

Sándor J. Kovács, PhD, MD, a professor of medicine and of cell biology and physiology at the School of Medicine, has been elected an honorary member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

Dany Matar, a rising senior, has been named an Astronaut Scholar by the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation. Astronaut Scholarships are awarded to juniors and seniors who are studying science, technology, engineering or mathematics with the intent to pursue research or advance their field upon completion of their final degree.

The Division of Physician-Scientists at the School of Medicine has selected three physicians for its third class of Dean’s Scholars.

Twelve recent alumni of Washington University in St. Louis earned Fulbright awards to travel abroad to conduct research or teach English. The program recognizes talented scholars and leaders who are committed to promoting global collaboration and understanding through research and teaching.
