Poet Eileen G’Sell and guitarist William Lenihan will join pianist Jay Oliver and drummer Steve Davis for an evening of music and spoken word as part of the Jazz at Holmes Series.

Multimedia artist Ebony G. Patterson and sculptor Jill Downen have won the 2018 Stone & DeGuire Contemporary Art Awards. The awards are presented by the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis. Artists receive $25,000 to advance their studio practices.

For China’s Dai minority, the peacock is a symbol of both grace and power. That’s why choreographer Kristine Xu chose a traditional Dai peacock dance for this year’s Lunar New Year Festival, which will take place Feb. 2 and 3 in Edison Theatre.

Sibling pianists Katia and Marielle Labèque — praised by The New York Times as “the best piano duet in front of an audience today” — will perform four-hand works by Igor Stravinsky, Philip Glass and Bryce Dessner (known to many as guitarist for The National) Jan. 28 as part of the Great Artists Series at Washington University in St. Louis.

Printmaking is a distinctive artistic practice that draws from a range of technical traditions. For many artists, this hybrid nature can lend itself to a range of experimental approaches, particularly around issues of multiplicity, seriality and mass communication. This spring, the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum at Washington University in St. Louis will present three new exhibitions that together explore the modern history and contemporary evolution of printed and editioned artworks.

Where do nature and design meet? And how does one create space within evolving nature? This fall, students in the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts explored those questions as part of “Disappearing Ground,” a speculative studio centering on Fogelpole Cave in Illinois.

Rugby is hard-hitting, fast-moving and adrenaline-fueled. But for elite Paralympic wheelchair athletes, the sport can also pose particular challenges. Over the last several months, students and faculty at Washington University in St. Louis have worked to research, design and construct prototype garments specifically tailored to the needs of athletes with disabilities.

“The Calling of St. Matthew” is a masterpiece of light and shadow. For the seminar “Caravaggio: Master and Murderer,” art historian William Wallace enlisted students and colleagues from the Performing Arts Department in Arts & Sciences to explore the painting’s mysteries.
