Robert Blankenship, PhD, the Lucille P. Markey Distinguished Professor of Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, has won the St. Louis Section of the American Chemical Society’s 2015 Midwest Award.
The organization established the award in 1944 to publicly recognize outstanding achievements in chemistry in the Midwest region. The award is given annually to a scientist who has made meritorious contributions to the advancement of pure or applied chemistry, chemical education, and the profession of chemistry.
Blankenship studies the mechanism of energy storage in organisms that conduct photosynthesis, with the goal of discovering the essential, irreducible aspects of how light energy is stored. He received the award Oct. 22 following a symposium on photosynthesis held in his honor.
