Renowned soloist Clea Galhano joins Kingsbury Ensemble for Virtuoso Recorder Music of the Baroque Nov. 12

Renowned recorder soloist Clea Galhano will join Washington University’s Kingsbury Ensemble for a concert of “Virtuoso Recorder Music of the Baroque” at 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12.

The performance takes place in the university’s Holmes Lounge, located in Ridgley Hall, on the west side of Brookings Quadrangle, near the intersection of Brooking and Hoyt drives. Tickets are $15 for the general public; $10 for seniors and Washington University faculty and staff; and $5 for students. The Kingsbury Ensemble specializes in music of the Baroque and Classical periods, employing historically accurate practices and instruments and performing in acoustically appropriate settings. Harpsichordist Maryse Carlin, instructor in the Department of Music in Arts & Sciences, directs the ensemble, which draws on a pool of early music specialists both regionally and nationwide.

The recorder – a vertical, rather than a transverse, flute – was frequently included in ensembles of the Baroque era. Galhano, a Brazilian player now living in the United States, has performed widely with early music ensembles and appeared as soloist with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. A recent European tour included performances at the Tage Alter Music Festival in Germany and at the prestigious Wigmore Hall in London. She teaches at the Festival de Musica Antiga in Rio de Janeiro and is on faculty at Macalester College in St. Paul as well as at the St. Paul Conservatory.

The program highlights trio sonatas with harpsichord from the 17th- and 18th centuries by Italian composers Dario Castello of Venice and Marco Uccellini, the latter maestro di cappella at the Farnese court in Parma and the Este court in Modena.

Also on the program are works by German composers Johann Sebastian Bach and Georg Philipp Telemann, as well as music of Johann Schmelzer, Vienna’s Habsburg court composer.
