Amy Eyler conducts research to advance the study of policies related to physical activity and obesity, as well as broader policy issues in public health. In addition to serving as deputy director of the Prevention Research Center in St. Louis, she co-directs the Policies for Action Child Health Weight Hub.

This research hub is funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to identify policies, laws, and regulations to build a culture of health, focusing on the implementation of nutrition and physical activity policies. Eyler is a well-published author and presenter. Her work has been featured in the American Journal of Public Health, American Journal of Preventive Medicine, and the Journal of Public Health Practice and Management. She is the lead editor of the 2016 book, “Prevention, Policy, and Public Health.”

Eyler is the assistant dean for public health and has served as the chair of the American Public Health Association’s Physical Activity Section. She is also a senior associate editor for Journal of Physical Activity and Health.

Open Streets initiatives benefit physical, social health of communities

Open Streets initiatives temporarily close streets to automobile traffic, so that people may use them for walking, bicycling, dancing, playing and socializing. Although the movement is gaining popularity in the United States — more than 100 different cities have hosted Open Streets events since 2008 — little is known about planning and implementing them. Aaron Hipp, PhD, explore the development and implementation of Open Streets initiatives and make recommendations for increasing the capacity of organizers to enhance their success.
