University Libraries announced a new research award designed to engage students’ research with collections from the Julian Edison Department of Special Collections. Apply for the Mendel Sato Research Award by May 7.

Theodore “Teddy” Levy, a Chancellor’s Graduate Fellow and dual-degree candidate in architecture and urban design at the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, has been named a 2021 Foundation Fellow by the National Organization of Minority Architects.

School of Medicine researchers have found that new variants of the virus that causes COVID-19 can evade antibodies that work against the original form of the virus, potentially undermining the effectiveness of vaccines and antibody-based drugs being used to prevent or treat COVID-19.

The drug buprenorphine is an effective treatment for opioid use disorder, but many who misuse opioids also take benzodiazepines to treat anxiety and similar conditions. School of Medicine researchers found that buprenorphine lowered the overdose risk, even in people who also took benzodiazepines such as Valium or Xanax.

Junior Sophie Devincenti and senior Tirzah Reed are representing the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis in Varsity Art XXV. The annual exhibition, which opens March 5, is hosted by Art St. Louis and features work by undergraduate and graduate students from St. Louis college- and university-level art programs.

The university Society of Professors Emeriti will hold its regular monthly meeting via Zoom at 12:30 p.m. Monday, March. 8. Susan Frehlich Appleton, at the School of Law, will speak on  “Families Under Construction: Parentage, Adoption and Assisted Reproduction.”

Chenyang Lu, the Fullgraf Professor at the McKelvey School of Engineering, has been named editor-in-chief of ACM Transactions on Cyber-Physical Systems, the field’s flagship journal.

Multidisciplinary artist Jordan Weber will discuss his work March 9. Weber is currently exploring questions of incarceration and healing in St. Louis as part of a new project, co-sponsored by the Sam Fox School, the Pulitzer Arts Foundation and the Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity & Equity.

A study from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis provides evidence that the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 can invade and replicate inside heart muscle cells, causing cell death and interfering with heart muscle contraction.

New research from faculty at the Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis is providing guidance to local policymakers on how they might contain the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19 until vaccination ramps up to levels high enough to provide widespread protection.
