Architects from across the country converged on Washington University in St. Louis’ Danforth Campus Oct. 6 and 7 to install “Sukkah City STL 2014: Between Absence and Presence.”
Sponsored by St. Louis Hillel and the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, the design competition challenged participants to reimagine the traditional Jewish Sukkah — a small, temporary structure erected each fall during the weeklong festival of Sukkot — through the lens of contemporary art and architecture. Ten winning structures, located just south of the Ann W. Olin Women’s Building, remain on view through Sunday, Oct. 12.

Students of Mary-Jean Cowell’s Dance 201: “Theory and Technique of Modern Dance” create semi-improvised dances as spontaneous and thoughtful responses to a sukkah displayed at Washington University. In so doing, they explore their own diversity and the wonders of site-specific dance.
