The “International Criminal Court at Ten,” a major international conference commemorating the 10th anniversary of the International Criminal Court, will convene at Washington University School of Law Sunday, Nov. 11, and Monday, Nov. 12.
The conference will honor victims of atrocity crimes and the 100th birthday of former Nuremberg prosecutor Whitney R. Harris. Speakers will include Stephen Rapp, U.S. ambassador-at-large, Office of Global Justice, and Hans Corell, former under-secretary-general for legal affairs and the legal counsel of the United Nations. The conference, which features more than 20 speakers, also includes special addresses by International Criminal Court Judges Hans-Peter Kaul and Joyce Aluoch, president of the Trial Division of the Court.
More than 100 people are expected to attend the opening event on Sunday, which begins with Sustenazo (Lament IV), a special performance dedicated to victims of atrocities that was composed by internationally acclaimed artist Monika Weiss, assistant professor of art at the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts. The public reception following the Sunday program also will feature the St. Louis Children’s Choir.
On Monday, the commemoration features a symposium focusing on the International Criminal Court’s achievements and challenges, early jurisprudence and future directions of the court, and discussions on the U.S. position toward the court.
There will be an awards ceremony for the first place winners of the inaugural Benjamin B. Ferencz Essay Competition during the conference. Based on a blind review of essay submissions from around the globe, Manuel J. Ventura, former trial support clerk, and Matthew Gillett, legal officer, both in the Office of the Prosecutor, International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, were selected to share the $10,000 award for the competition.
