ABOUT THE COMMISSION:
Answering a bipartisan call from U.S. Sens. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) and Mark Warner (D-Vir.), and Reps. Tom Petri (R-Wis.) and David Price (D-N.C.), the American Academy of Arts and Sciences has created a blue-ribbon Commission on the Humanities and Social Sciences.
The commission’s goal is to claim space in the national dialogue for the humanities and the social sciences and to recommend specific steps that government, schools and universities, cultural institutions, businesses and philanthropies can take to support and strengthen these areas of knowledge.
The St. Louis forum — the third in a series of regional meetings at which commission members will receive testimony — will focus on the importance of the humanities and social sciences to public life and lifelong learning. The meeting will include representatives from State Humanities Councils, historical societies, universities, libraries and other cultural institutions from across Missouri.
