Exploring engineering

St. Louis-area high school student Anjali Fernandes creates a wind turbine during the School of Engineering & Applied Science’s “Explore Engineering” program July 26. The new program, which grew out of a conversation between students who belong to the National Society of Black Engineers and Ralph Quatrano, PhD, dean of the School of Engineering & Applied Science and the Spencer T. Olin Professor, seeks to give underrepresented groups exposure to engineering and to the university. Among other activities, students participated in hands-on projects in biomedical engineering, renewable energy and web-application design. Ruth Okamoto, PhD, senior research associate in the Department of Mechanical Engineering & Materials Science, organized the day’s activities.
