Constitution Day lunch forum Sept. 17

The Gephardt Institute for Public Service and the American Constitution Society at the School of Law will commemorate Constitution Day — the annual commemoration of the Sept. 17, 1787, signing of the U.S. Constitution — with a panel discussion on “The First Amendment in the 21st Century.”

The event will be held from 12-1:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 17, in the Women’s Building Formal Lounge.

Panelists are:

  • Denise Lieberman, JD, attorney and civil rights activist;
  • Neil Richards, JD, professor of law at Washington University in St. Louis; and
  • Mark Sableman, JD, attorney at Thompson Coburn, board member for the ACLU and author of More Speech, Not Less: Communications Law in the Information Age.

The panel discussion will focus on:

  • expression on the Internet;
  • recent court rulings on gay students participating in Christian student groups and the U.S. military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy;
  • terrorism, security and privacy issues;
  • saggy pants laws; and
  • cursing and the FCC.

Registration is required by Wednesday, Sept. 15, to Robin Hattori, assistant director at the Gephardt Institute, at rhattori@wustl.edu. Lunch will be provided to the first 35 registered attendees.
