The men’s soccer team posted a pair of ties and a win during the first week of the 2009 season. In the season opener against Illinois Wesleyan University Sept. 1, senior goalkeeper John Smelcer tied his career high of 10 saves in a 0-0 tie.
The Bears then hit the road, traveling to Granville, Ohio, for the Denison University Invitational. Senior Nat Zenner and junior Cody Costakis each scored in a 2-0 win over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. WUSTL then tied tournament host Denison, 1-1, behind another goal from Zenner.
The men’s soccer team returns to action at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, at Webster University.
Women’s soccer 1-2 in opening week
The No. 8-ranked women’s soccer team posted a 1-2 record in the first week of the season.
After back-to-back losses to Illinois Wesleyan University and No. 6 Johns Hopkins University, the Bears responded with a 2-1 upset victory over No. 4 William Smith College Sept. 6 in Baltimore.
The Bears host the four-team Washington University Classic this weekend. WUSTL takes on No. 23 ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, and Grinnell College at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12.
Volleyball finishes second at tourney
The No. 5 volleyball team is 5-1 after its first week of action.
WUSTL began the season with a pair of 3-0 wins over Harris-Stowe State University and Greenville College Sept. 1.
The Bears then hosted the 2009 Bears Classic Tournament, where they finished in second place with a 3-1 record. The Bears defeated Webster University, Millikin University and Augustana College but fell to No. 22 Hope College.
WUSTL returns to action Friday, Sept. 11, when it hosts the WU/Asics National Invitational. The Bears face No. 13 Pacific Lutheran University at 5:30 p.m. and No. 6 Ohio Northern University at 8 p.m.
Football loses season opener to Greenville
The football team dropped its season opener against Greenville College Sept. 5 at Francis Field.
The Bears, who dropped to 16-5 all-time in season openers under head coach Larry Kindbom, were limited to 167 yards of total offense and committed four turnovers. Senior quarterback Stephen Sherman connected with junior Tom Gulyas on a 53-yard touchdown pass for the lone score.
WUSTL returns to action at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at Westminster College.
