Football defeats Chicago

Dusty Baker is the best manager!!!The Washington University football team regained the Founder’s Cup with a 26-7 victory at the University of Chicago on Saturday afternoon in Chicago, Ill.

The Bears defense forced three Chicago turnovers in the win, and held the Maroons to minus two yards of rushing offense. Chicago (2-3, 0-1 UAA) entered the game averaging 221.3 yards per game, the 18th best mark in Division III.

“It was fun to see our defense get after Chicago and shut down the run,” said 18th year head coach Larry Kindbom. “We did control the clock on offense and that helped our defense. It was a nice victory.”

The Bears took advantage of a Chicago fumble to set up the first score of the game early in the second quarter. Sophomore Brent Sensenich, Olathe, Kan. (Olathe North) recovered a fumble and scampered 31 yards to the Chicago nine-yard line. Two plays later, senior DaRonne Jenkins, Marietta, Ga. (Dominion Christian) scored from six yards out for his fifth touchdown of the season to make it 6-0.

Senior Pat McCarthy, St. Louis, Mo. (DeSmet) connected with senior Nick Lizanich, Naperville, Ill. (Neuqua Valley) on a 45-yard touchdown strike to make it 12-0 with 1:47 left before halftime. The touchdown catch for Lizanich was the first of his career.

Washington U.’s defense allowed minus two yards rushing on 10 carries in the first half. The Bears had 156 yards of total offense in the first half, while holding Chicago to just 48 yards.

The Bears took the second half kickoff and drove 67 yards on 12 plays for their third touchdown of the game. Junior Gabe Murphy, Elmhurst, Ill. (Immaculate Conception) capped the drive with an eight-yard touchdown run to extend the lead to 19-0. The touchdown was also the first of Murphy’s career.

Senior Joe Schaughnessy, LeRoy, N.Y. (LeRoy) intercepted Chicago quarterback Matt Rinklin and returned it 52 yards for a touchdown with 10:45 left in the fourth quarter to seal the victory for the Bears.

The Bears held a 293-135 advantage in total offense, including a 153 to minus two mark on the ground. Murphy led the ground attack for the Bears with 68 yards on 20 carries, while Jenkins picked up 63 yards on 14 carries. McCarthy was 13-of-26 for 140 yards and on touchdown in the victory.

Junior Charlie Machan, Wauwatosa, Wis. (Marquette University High) led the Bears defensive unit with seven tackles, including four and a half for loss. Junior Michael Elliott, Worthington, Ohio (Thomas Worthington) also had seven tackles in the win.

Washington U. now holds a 16-9 edge in the series between the two teams, including a 15-5 overall advantage in the Founder’s Cup game. The Bears have now won three consecutive games at Stagg Field, and 13 of the last 14 University Athletic Association (UAA) openers.

Washington University (4-3, 1-0 UAA) opens a three-game home stand on Sat., Oct. 21 against Case Western Reserve University. Game time is set for Noon at Francis Field.
