Wendell Burnette, AIA, principal of Wendell Burnette Architects in Phoenix, will speak about his work at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 25, as part of the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts’ fall Architecture Lecture Series.
The talk is free and open to the public and takes place in Givens Hall, at the intersection of Forsyth Boulevard and Hoyt Drive. The Architecture Lecture Series is sponsored by the College of Architecture and the Graduate School of Architecture & Urban Design. For more information call (314) 935-9300 or visit www.arch.wustl.edu.
Burnette, who will present Architecture’s fall Coral Courts Lecture, is an assistant professor of architecture at Arizona State University. His practice spans a wide range of commercial and residential projects and is noted for its unique sensitivity to place, particularly the American desert.
Burnette’s many honors include a 1999 “Emerging Voices Award” from the Architectural League of New York; a 1999 P/A Design Award from Architecture magazine; and two “Record House” Awards from Architectural Record magazine, in 1996 and 2000. His work has been exhibited at the Centre de Cultura Contemporania de Barcelona, Spain, and at the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum in New York.
The Coral Courts Lectures highlight outstanding contemporary practitioners from across the United States and abroad. The lectureship is named in honor of the Coral Courts Motel, a now-demolished Streamlined Moderne motor court formerly located in St. Louis along Route 66. Recent Coral Courts lecturers have included Ricardo Legoretta of Mexico and Rafael Vitoly of New York.
The Architecture Lecture Series continues at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13, with Nigel Tonks, a director of Ove Arup & Partners in London. Tonks, who has nearly 20 years experience in dealing with low-energy and sustainable design, will speak on “Global Warming: a Driving Force in Architectural Expression?” in the Laboratory Sciences Building, Room 300. In addition, Tonks will conduct a weekend-long, one-credit course as part of Architecture’s ongoing series “Masterclasses in Environmental Design.”
Tonks is currently leading building services engineering for the proposed Saint Louis Art Museum expansion by David Chipperfield Architects. At 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17, Chipperfield himself will deliver Architecture’s fall Fumihiko Maki lecture with a talk titled “Normal/Special” in Whitaker Auditorium.
Established in 1984, David Chipperfield Architects has a staff of more than 120 at offices in London, Berlin, Milan and Shanghai. Major projects include the acclaimed River and Rowing Museum in Henley-on-Thames and the rebuilding of the Neues Museum in Berlin, the latter due to reopen in 2009. The practice has won over 20 national and international competitions and many international awards and citations for design excellence. In 2004 Chipperfield was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire for services to architecture.
