A Debatable Return: Colleges spend millions on playing host to presidential debates. What do they get out of it?
The Chronicle of Higher Education explores whether hosting a presidential debates is a worthwhile project for colleges in an article published online as part of the Oct. 15 issue. The Chronicle will host a live online discussion with Steve Givens, assistant to the chancellor at Washington University in St. Louis, about whether it is really worth it for colleges to play host to presidential and vice-presidential debates, given the events’ high costs. The online discussion, will take place on Thursday October 14, at 1 p.m., U.S. Eastern time. ‘On a date at the debate’ – Northwestern University student attends Oct. 8 debate as guest of the CPD
Howard W. Buffett, a junior majoring in communications at Northwestern University, describes his visit to the Oct. 8 debate as a guest of the Commission on Presidential Debates. Buffet, whose father serves on the Commission, published his account of the event in the student newspaper at Northwestern University. Other Northwestern students watched the debate at The Keg of Evanston.
High-tech information portal helps police keep candidates safe at WUSTL debate; is prototype for Missouri homeland security network
Behind President Bush and Sen. John Kerry’s Oct. 8 debate at Washington University was an intense IT-integration effort, pulling together national, state, and local emergency responders. These responders relied on the real-time flow of data to ensure the only bombs going off in St. Louis were rhetorical, according to an article in Information Week. The portal is a prototype of a communication and alert Web portal being developed by the Missouri Department of Homeland Security that’s scheduled to go live Nov. 1. The Missouri state portal will serve as a central point of communication for first responders throughout the state during emergencies.
