Students explore St. Louis cultural attractions

Students looking for ways to explore St. Louis and discover its many cultural amenities will have plenty of opportunities in the coming months.

Junior Aaron Mertz, president of ArtSci Council, the undergraduate student organization of the College of Arts & Sciences, has planned several trips to landmarks such as the Saint Louis Art Museum, the Saint Louis Symphony, the Missouri Botanical Garden and the Gateway Arch.

“These activities have a goal of showing students that St. Louis has a wealth of cultural opportunities,” Mertz said. “We want to help students meet other students who have similar interests and provide a way for them to connect with faculty members whom they might not otherwise meet.”

Faculty members, including William E. Wallace, Ph.D., the Barbara Murphy Bryant Distinguished Professor of Art History in Arts & Sciences, and Hugh J. MacDonald, Ph.D., the Avis Blewett Professor of Music in Arts & Sciences, along with Sue Taylor, concert coordinator for the music department, have served as lecturers and tour guides on excursions.

Upcoming trips include:

• Nov. 12: Saint Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis;

• Nov. 20: Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts; and

• Dec. 4: Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra.

“Ultimately, we hope to show young people that cultural activities, especially classical music, are fulfilling, exciting and enjoyable,” Mertz said.
