Washington University Medical Center and the CORTEX district just east of the Medical Campus are evolving daily. On Aug. 12, a northbound lane on Kingshighway Boulevard and the adjoining sidewalk north of Children’s Place will close in preparation for demolition related to revitalization of Washington University Medical Center’s north campus. At the same time, barriers will go up around the former Jewish College of Nursing and the Kingshighway, Yalem and Steinberg buildings — all of which will come down as part of the first phase of the Campus Renewal Project.

The 15th Annual Komen St. Louis Race for the Cure in downtown St. Louis is June 15. Since 1998, when Komen St. Louis Race for the Cure began, Komen has awarded about $28 million for outreach, education, screening and research programs at Washington University Medical Center.

A groundbreaking for a new, $50 million Shriners Hospitals for Children-St. Louis recently was held on the Washington University Medical Center campus. The planned hospital, at the corner of Clayton Road and Newstead Avenue, will replace the Shriners Hospital in Frontenac. Ninety-one security cameras are being installed in the Central West End, 60 of which will be funded by the Washington University Medical Center. An additional 42 such cameras will be installed throughout the medical campus. The cameras are part of ongoing security efforts that also include more bike patrols.​

A road- and bridge-construction project that will impact Washington University, and particularly the medical center, is scheduled to begin in the next few days. The project is expected to completed by summer 2014.

Washington University School of Medicine employees and students should be aware of an upcoming Interstate 64/Highway 40 construction project that, when completed, will greatly enhance access to the campus, but will create disruptions for travelers in the coming months. The Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine began seeing patients Jan. 7 at Siteman’s newest outpatient location,in south St. Louis County.

BJC HealthCare, Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Louis Children’s Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine are taking another step forward in the future development of the Washington University Medical Center. The vision is to transform the campus over the next 10 years through renovations and new construction.
