WUSTL professor of Italian to discuss ‘Boethius in the Renaissance’ at Olin Library

Washington University Libraries present a book talk by Michael Sherberg, PhD, associate professor of Italian in Arts & Sciences, at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, in Olin Library, Ginkgo Reading Room, Level 1. Sherberg’s lecture — titled “Boethius in the Renaissance: What Recent Acquisitions Teach Us” — will discuss three 16th-century translations of Boethius’s influential 6th-century work, Consolation of Philosophy, and what the translations tell modern scholars about the politics and poetics of translation in the Renaissance.

Elizabeth Bishop poetry event Oct. 23

Washington University Libraries and the St. Louis Poetry Center will present a program featuring the works of renowned American poet Elizabeth Bishop at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23, in Wilson Hall, Room 214, on Washington University’s Danforth Campus. A reception will follow in the Ginkgo Reading Room in the nearby Olin Library. The event is free and open to the public.

Marian Janssen to speak on acclaimed mid-century poet Isabella Gardner

An investigation of the letters of Isabella Gardner, a gifted but somewhat forgotten poet of the mid-20th century, brought Dutch scholar Marian Janssen to Washington University Libraries’ Isabella Gardner Papers. Janssen returns to WUSTL to discuss her biography of Gardner, titled Not at All What One Is Used To: The Life and Times of Isabella Gardner, at 4 p.m. Friday, April 29, in Olin Library’s Ginkgo Reading Room.

Dana Brown’s Life on Safari premieres at Steinberg Dec. 9

HEC-TV’s new documentary film Dana Brown’s Life on Safari will premiere at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, at Steinberg Auditorium in Steinberg Hall on the Danforth Campus. The documentary chronicles adventures of Safari Coffee founder Dana Brown. After the film, there will be a question-and-answer “Meet the Producer” session and a reception.

Washington University Libraries adds Frank Marshall Davis Collection

Washington University Libraries’ Film & Media Archive has partnered with the University of Hawaii-West Oahu to preserve and digitize an interview with African-American poet and journalist Frank Marshall Davis. Also preserved were photographs, news clippings and poetry readings by Davis, which along with the interview make up the Frank Marshall Davis Collection, a new addition to the holdings of the Film & Media Archive.
