Busy sequencing technique saves money and time
Computer scientist Michael Brent has developed innovative sequencing techniques that will aid in the sequencing of mammals.A computer scientist at Washington University in St. Louis has developed a novel technique to extract more DNA from a single sequence reaction than is normally possible, reducing both cost and time of the sequencing process. Michael R. Brent, Ph.D., associate professor of computer science, has applied software developed in his Washington University laboratory that sorts through the maze of genetic information and finds predicted sequences.
Renowned historian of life and biomedical sciences to give Thomas Hall Lecture
Everett Mendelsohn, one of America’s foremost historians of science, will deliver the Thomas Hall Lecture titled “Dolly and the Historians: Science, Politics and Ethics of Cloning” as part of the Washington University Assembly Series at 4 p.m., Thursday, November 13. The lecture is free and open to the public and will be held in Rebstock Hall, Room 215, located just east of Mallinckrodt Center (6445 Forsyth Blvd) on the Washington University campus.
Nobel Prize recipient Sydney Brenner to discuss ‘Humanity’s Genes’
Nobel Prize-winning biologist Sydney Brenner will deliver the annual Arthur Holly Compton Memorial Lecture for the Assembly Series at 4 p.m. Tues, Oct. 14. The lecture,”Humanity’s Genes,” is free and open to the public and will be held in Graham Chapel, located just north of Mallinckrodt Center (6445 Forsyth Blvd.) on the Washington University campus. Brenner’s lecture will discuss some of the questions raised by the completion of the Human Genome Project. He will talk about both the benefits and the fears raised by recent breakthroughs in genetic research, and his belief that the brain is mightier than the genome.
SARS genome sequenced by researchers
While most of the world works to contain the spread of the virus that causes severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), the Genome Sequencing Center (GSC) in the School of Medicine has become part of the international effort to understand the microbe. Researchers at the GSC were called upon to sequence the new virus and poorly understood human pathogen. They completed the task in what is possibly record time — less than a week.
Genome of a Major Member of Gut Bacteria Sequenced: Clues to Beneficial Relationships Between Humans and Microorganisms
Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have completed sequencing the genome of Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, one of the most prevalent bacteria that live in the human intestine. The results appear in the March 28 issue of the journal Science.
