Scientists map the wiring of the biological clock
In the June 5 issue of Neuron, WUSTL biologist Erik Herzog and his
colleagues report the discovery of a crucial part of the biological
clock: the wiring that sets its accuracy to within a few minutes out of
the 1440 minutes per day. This wiring uses the neurotransmitter, GABA,
to connect the individual cells of the biological clock in a fast
network that changes strength with time of day.
Three faculty elected to National Academy of Sciences
Three Washington University in St. Louis scientists are among the 84
members and 21 foreign associates elected to the National Academy of
Sciences this year. Election to the academy is considered one of the
highest honors that can be accorded a U.S. scientist or engineer.
2013 Spector Prize goes to two students
This year the Spector Prize has been awarded to two students, Megan Kelly and Jennifer Stevens.The prize, given by the Department of Biology in memory of a 1938 WUSTL graduate, recognizes outstanding undergraduate achievement in research. Kelly did research on the chemical signals used by malaria parasites and Stevens on evolutionary trade-offs in weakly electric fish.
Obituary: Marilyn Krukowski, professor emerita of biology, 80
Marilyn Krukowski, PhD, professor emerita of biology, died Sunday, April 7, 2013, in St. Louis from complications
of multiple sclerosis. She was 80. Krukowski taught vertebrate structure (anatomy) in the Department of Biology for more than 30 years. Her students raved about
the quality of her teaching and often cited the course as the best they ever had taken at Washington University.
Katims to receive 2013 Stalker Award
Andrew Katims has been selected to be the recipient of
the 2013 Harrison D. Stalker Award given each year by the Department of
Biology. The award is given to the graduating senior in biology
whose undergraduate career was marked by outstanding scientific
scholarship as well as contributions to the university in areas of
artistic expression and/or community service.
The secret lives of the wild asses of the Negev
The Asiatic wild ass (Equus hemionus) disappeared from the Negev, the desert region in southern Israel, in the 1920s. But a remnant herd survived in the Shah of Iran’s zoo. Some of these animals were reintroduced to the
desert beginning in 1982. Recently scientists at Ben-Gurion University in Israel and Washington University in St. Louis have been inventing clever new ways to check on the status of these famously elusive animals.
Walking in the footsteps of 19th- and 20th-century naturalists, scientists find battered plant-pollinator network
Two biologists at Washington University in St. Louis were delighted to discover a meticulous
dataset on a plant-pollinator network recorded by Illinois naturalist
Charles Robertson between 1884 and 1916. Re-collecting part of Robertson’s network, they learned that although the network has compensated for some losses, battered by climate change and habitat loss it is now weaker and less resilient than in Robertson’s time.
Global NeuroDay is March 2
Many WUSTL students will be on hand at the St. Louis Science Center this Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. to explain the brain and their brain research to interested visitors. They are participants in NeuroDay, a free brain science expo featuring hands-on
activities and demonstrations that provide a rare opportunity to learn
about the human brain, the nervous system, neurological disorders and
cutting-edge brain research.
A WUSTL undergraduate may have written that Wikipedia article you’re reading
This fall Joan Strassmann, PhD, professor of biology in Arts & Sciences taught a course in behavior ecology that was also an official Wikipedia course that required students both to edit an existing Wikipedia entry and then either add 25
references and 2500 words to a second entries or to create new ones. “No work by students as good as Washington University’s students should ever end up
in a professor’s drawer,” said Strassmann. “It was their responsibility
as smart people who were getting a great education to help others.”
Global plant diversity still hinges on local battles against invasives, study suggests
Scientists at Washington University in St. Louis long suspected that dueling findings about the impact of invasive species on biodiversity reflect the different sizes of study sites. Now field work confims that the impact of invasive species is different at small scales than at large ones. The scientists hope an understanding of this “scale dependence” will help settle arguments that have broken out in the scientific community and discourage recent popular science articles downplaying the damage invasives cause.
