Assembly series

LightmanAlan Lightman, popular novelist and MIT physicist, will deliver the ArtSci Council, Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi Lecture for Washington University’s Assembly Series. His talk, “The Physicist as Novelist,” will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 13, in Graham Chapel.

Events include film screening of “Eyes on the Prize” and a panel discussion about the series; a keynote address by Robert Moses; and an exhibition in Olin Library.

Robert Moses, one of the leading figures in the American civil rights movement, will give the Assembly Series lecture at 11 a.m. Wed., April 6 in Graham Chapel. The annual Martin Luther King memorial event, sponsored by the Association of Black Students, is free and open to the public. This is the keynote address for the “Documenting Change” symposium.

MacFarlaneThe animated adult series, “Family Guy,” broke the mold for its genre, created a large cult fan base, and made its creator, 33-year-old Seth MacFarlane, famous. MacFarlane will talk about his controversial series for the Assembly Series at 11 a.m. Wed., March 30, in Graham Chapel.

Sherman Alexie, a writer known for his poetry, novels, short fiction and screenplays, will deliver the Buder Center for American Indian Studies Lecture for the Washington University Assembly Series at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 16. His talk, “Without Reservations: An Urban Indian’s Comic, Poetic and Highly Irreverent Look at the World,” will be held in Graham Chapel, located just north of Mallinckrodt Student Center (6445 Forsyth Blvd.) on the Washington University Hilltop Campus. The talk is free and open to the public.

NulandSherwin Nuland, physician, professor and best selling author, will relay his experiences working with tsunami victims in Sri Lanka for the Washington University Assembly Series at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 23, in Graham Chapel. His talk is called “Tsunami Medical Diary.”

HigginbothamR. Don Higginbotham, a leading expert on the American Revolution and George Washington, will deliver the annual Thomas Fulbright Lecture in History as part of the Assembly Series at 11 a.m. Feb. 23 in Graham Chapel. The chapel is located just north of Mallinckrodt Student Center (6445 Forsyth Blvd.) on the Washington University Hilltop Campus. The lecture is free and open to the public.

WilliamsThe celebrated spoken word artist Saul Williams will give a presentation for Washington University’s Assembly Series at 11 a.m. Wed., Feb. 16. The talk is free and open to the public and will be held in Graham Chapel, located just north of Mallinckrodt Center (6445 Forsyth Blvd.) on the Washington University campus.

KerreyRobert Kerrey, current president of New School University, 9-11 Commissioner, and former U.S. senator from Nebraska will deliver the Stein Lecture in Ethics as part of the Assembly Series at 4 p.m. Feb. 8 in Graham Chapel. His talk, “Uncovering the Truth in a Democratic Society,” will focus on his work with the 9-11 Commission.

Pulitzer Prize-winning author Susan Faludi will give an Assembly Series lecture titled “Gender Roles: A Generation of Change” at 11 a.m. Oct. 13 in Graham Chapel.
