The Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum will present three classic Hollywood films as part of its Some Like it Cool film series Dec. 9, 10 and 11. Held in conjunction with the exhibition Birth of the Cool: California Art, Design, and Culture at Midcentury, the festival will feature screenings of Rebel Without a Cause (Dec. 9), Anatomy of a Murder (Dec. 10) and North by Northwest (Dec. 11).

Eric CesalSt. Francis de Sales church, popularly known as “the Cathedral of South St. Louis,” has been a local landmark since the end of the Civil War, listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. This fall five teams of architecture students have worked to create redevelopment plans for an abandoned children’s theater, located on the church’s six-building campus, as part of the Sam Fox School’s Community Service Competition. Winners of the competition will be announced Oct. 17 at a reception in Givens Hall.

So argues Terry Smith, the Andrew W. Mellon Professor of Contemporary Art History and Theory at the University of Pittsburgh, who will discuss “Contemporary Art and the Contemporaneity Question” at the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum Oct. 13.

The Saturday afternoon jazz series, a set of four free concerts in conjunction with the “Birth of Cool Exhibit” at Kemper Art Museum begins Sept. 27 with the BAG Trio.

From painting and architecture to music, film, furniture and the graphic arts, 1950s Los Angeles was an epicenter of American modernism. This fall, the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum examines that era with “Birth of the Cool: California Art, Design, and Culture at Midcentury.”

Can eco-fashion outgrow its granola image? On Sept. 18 the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts and the St. Louis chapter of Fashion Group International will explore that question with “Eco-Watch…Creating Fashion Solutions.”
