What happens in your brain when you look at this Klimt painting? A lot more than you might ever guess, according to Nobel laureate neuroscientist Eric Kandel, who will explore the connection between art and the mind/brain in his talk, “The Age of Insight: The Quest to Understand the Unconscious in Art, Mind and Brain from Vienna 1900 to the Present” for the Assembly Series at 5 p.m. Monday, March 3, in Graham Chapel.

Shinohara Kazua remains something of a cult figure. Although his work has inspired generations of architects, it has seldom been seen outside Japan. But this spring, the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum presents “On the Thresholds of Space-Making,” the first U.S. museum show dedicated to the influential mathematician-turned-architect.

Some WUSTL faculty members have received awards from the Fulbright Program for academic pursuits in areas ranging from architecture to education to medicine. 

A recent gift of $1,025,000 will establish the Suren G. Dutia and Jas K. Grewal Global Impact Award in the Skandalaris Center for Entrepreneurial Studies at Washington University. The endowed fund will receive $1 million, with the remaining $25,000 to support awards made during the current academic year. Applications are being accepted until March 24 for awards to support business ventures aimed at catalyzing social change.

Bruce Lindsey, dean of architecture, and Peter MacKeith, associate professor of architecture, both have won important honors in the 2013-14 Architectural Education Awards.

​Mary Jo Bang is a poet who, for most of her life, has secretly made visual art. Buzz Spector is a visual artist who, for most of his life, has sercretly made poetry. Now both reveal their secret practices with “Otherwise,” an exhibition on view through Feb. 8 at the Fort Condo Compound for the Arts.

The world is always falling apart. And artists have long been interested in the melancholy symbolism of ruin and decay. But in recent years, such themes have acquired particular urgency as global environmental issues increasingly become matters of both scientific and public concern.

Alfredo Jaar is one of Latin America’s foremost contemporary artists, known for installations and public interventions that investigate war, corruption, social justice, media desensitization and the global balance of power. On Monday, Feb. 10, Jaar will deliver the inaugural Bunny and Charles Burson Visiting Lecture for the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts.

Seven current and former Washington University in St. Louis students, collectively known as “The Force,” took home the top prize of $50,000 during the GlobalHack event held Jan. 31-Feb. 2 at Union Station in St. Louis.

The Washington University in St. Louis Assembly Series turned 60 in 2013, and to mark such an august occasion, it’s fitting to remember why the lecture series was conceived in the first place. The Assembly Series launched during the institution’s centennial celebration in 1953 as a way to involve the broader St. Louis community in the robust intellectual life on campus.
