Finances will be a little less daunting this summer for five Washington University undergraduates pursuing unpaid public service internships in New York, Washington, D.C., and the villages of East Africa. They will be the first beneficiaries of a new Public Service Summer Stipend program sponsored by the University’s Richard A. Gephardt Institute for Public Service.

The performances will feature music and comedy as well as appearances by several guest groups from the University’s vibrant a cappella community.

David Kilper/WUSTL Photo ServicesMartin KennedyMartin Kennedy, assistant professor of theory & composition in the Department of Music in Arts & Sciences, will present a concert of original chamber music at 8 p.m. Sunday, April 9, in Steinberg Auditorium. The program will include four works performed by members of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, students and faculty from the music department, and Kennedy himself.

The Edison Theatre performances update the biblical story of Susannah and the Elders to 1940s Appalachia; Jolly Stewart directs.

“After the Digital Divide: German Aesthetic Theory in the Age of New Media” March 30-April 1 is sponsored by the Department of Germanic Languages & Literatures.

She’s a contributor to numerous volumes on the art and photography of the American West; her most recent book is Print the Legend: Photography and the American West.

Both events are part of The Writing Program’s spring Reading Series, are free and open to the public and will take place in Hurst Lounge.

The celebrated writer and essayist’s talk, titled “Metaphor,” will explore the true essence of metaphors and their connection to language and creativity.

The concerts will feature more than a dozen dancers in nine original, contemporary works by student choreographers in the PAD’s Dance Program.
