Mahendra Gupta named new dean of the Olin School of Business at Washington University in St. Louis
GuptaMahendra R. Gupta, senior associate dean of the Olin School of Business and the Geraldine J. and Robert L. Virgil Professor of Accounting and Management, will become dean of the business school as of July 1, 2005, according to Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton. Gupta will succeed Stuart Greenbaum who is retiring from the position after ten years of service.
Three faculty elected to American Academy of Arts and Sciences
Washington University professors John E. Heuser, Henry L. “Roddy” Roediger III and Norman J. Schofield have been elected as fellows in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences class of 2005. Heuser, MD., is a professor of Cell Biology and Physiology in the School of Medicine; Roediger, Ph.D., is the James S. McDonnell Distinguished University Professor and Dean of Academic Planning in Arts & Sciences; and Schofield, Ph.D., is the William R. Taussig Professor of Political Economy in Arts & Sciences and director of the Center for Political Economy.
WUSM physicians take proactive approach to ethics
An operating room trauma team is told their unconscious patient is a Jehovah’s Witness with religious objections to blood transfusions, but the patient has lost a lot of blood. Doctors are faced with ethical dilemmas such as this in hospital rooms and doctor offices around the nation every day. To help deal with these issues, the Center for the Study of Ethics and Human Values at Washington University offers monthly surgical ethics sessions as a way to contemplate the emotional, humane and legal implications of medical decisions. Skandalaris Center at Washington University provides entrepreneurs a new outlet for bouncing around their ideas
A new Web site designed to capitalize on St. Louis’ entrepreneurial energy was launched by the Skandalaris Center for Entrepreneurial Studies at Washington University in St. Louis. The new site is called IdeaBounce.com and will support the growth of innovation, collaboration and entrepreneurial activity. IdeaBounce.com participants will also have a chance to vet their ideas before a panel of judges during a quarterly event at the Olin School of Business. The first IdeaBounce event is this Thursday, April 28th at 5 p.m.

Syverud named dean of the School of Law at Washington University in St. Louis
SyverudKent D. Syverud, dean of the Vanderbilt University Law School, has been named dean of the School of Law at Washington University in St. Louis, effective Jan. 1, 2006, according to Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton. He also will become the Ethan A. H. Shepley University Professor.
Joel Seligman, who came to Washington University in 1999 to serve as law dean, will become president of the University of Rochester on July 1, 2005. Prior to Syverud’s arrival, Daniel L. Keating, associate dean for academic affairs and the Tyrrell Williams Professor of Law, will serve as dean until Dec. 31, 2005.
