The Gephardt Institute for Public Service is coordinating a university-wide voter registration campaign Tuesday, Sept. 18. On that day, the institute will conduct Missouri voter registration and provide information on absentee ballot registration.
Gerald Early, director of the Center for the Humanities at Washington University in St. Louis, and Leslie Berlowitz, president of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, will host the third national meeting of the Academy’s blue-ribbon Commission on the Humanities and Social Sciences. The event, which will take place at the Missouri History Museum Sept. 7, will feature more than a dozen local arts leaders testifying to the importance of the humanities and social sciences in public life and lifelong learning.
Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton will present “An Update on Entrepreneurship and Innovation at Washington University” at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, in Moore Auditorum on the Medical School campus. Wrighton will speak about ways new programs and incentives have changed the landscape for entrepreneurship at the university.
Researchers from the new interdisciplinary Center for Biological Systems Engineering at Washington University will host its inaugural symposium, sponsored by Lockheed Martin, from 8 a.m.-3:45 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, in Whitaker Hall, Room 100. Rohit V. Pappu, PhD, professor of biomedical engineering, directs the new center. Lockheed Martin is sponsoring the symposium.

New extended hours are coming to Olin Library on a trial basis during the 2012-13 school year. 24/4 hours (open 24 hours, Monday-Thursday) begin the week of Sunday, Sept. 9, in the fall and the week of Sunday, Jan. 27, in the spring. During reading and exam weeks, Olin Library will remain open 24 hours, seven days per week.

families. Fortunately,
for family members of WUSTL students, staff members are keeping the tradition alive. Part of “First 40” programming, staff members take students’ photos and hand out free school supplies. Right, junior Jeannette Mundy is one of many upperclassmen who still observe the tradition.
Washington University Libraries staff members are offering a series of free workshops to help introduce students, faculty and staff to Twitter. Each of the four sessions will be held in Olin Library’s Arc (Level A) at 3 p.m. on Thursday afternoons throughout the fall semester with topics ranging from Twitter 101, an introductory class, to more advanced workshops on specific uses of the popular social media platform.
