Liberty Vittert Capito, a professor of practice of data science at WashU Olin Business School, is the host of a new educational podcast, “Amended! Liberty’s Guide to the First Amendment,” produced by Voxtopica with financial support from the Frick Initiative at Washington University in St. Louis.
The podcast explores the truths and common misconceptions about the First Amendment. Across the six-part series, Vittert Capito breaks down each right enshrined in the First Amendment, tracing its history while examining how it is interpreted, challenged and defended in modern America. The series focuses on myth-busting and context, offering an accessible guide to constitutional rights that are often invoked but rarely explained.
Vittert Capito interviewed nearly 30 scholars, journalists and key participants in landmark First Amendment cases for the series, including WashU’s Chancellor Andrew D. Martin and John Inazu, the Sally D. Danforth Distinguished Professor of Law & Religion.
“At a time when nearly everything we say or do can be amplified, scrutinized or misunderstood, the First Amendment is both more relevant and more confusing than ever,” Vittert Capito said. “’Amended!’ isn’t about telling people what to think. It’s about helping them understand the rules of the road and the history that paved the way for our freedoms.”
“Amended!: Liberty’s Guide to the First Amendment” is available across all major podcast platforms, and it has been recognized by Apple Podcasts.
