Washington People: Patricia Olynyk
Scaphocephalus. The word refers to a condition in which the shape of the skull is markedly long and narrow. At the Mutter Museum in Philadelphia, the word is tattooed onto a 19th-century exemplar, neat cursive script fading into aged bone. Over the past several years, Patricia Olynyk, director of the Graduate School of Art, has both detailed and interrogated the Mutter exhibits through a series of large lightbox photographs.
Apply now to spend three weeks in China next summer
Frank Yin, PhD, ambassador to Tsinghua University, a partner institution in the McDonnell International Scholars Academy, invites Washington University in St. Louis faculty and students to participate in Tsinghua’s annual English summer camp, which will be held from June 26 to July 13, 2012. The English summer camp is an intensive English language experience for Tsinghua students. Each day is devoted to lessons, lectures, and various activities, including seminars, song and dance competitions, and other games. WUSTL native or near-native English speakers are invited to join the camp as visiting teachers and volunteers.
Women’s Society seeking nominations for Harriet K. Switzer Leadership Award
The Women’s Society of Washington University (WSWU) is seeking nominations of full-time senior women students for the Harriet K. Switzer Leadership Award. This award is presented to the honoree at WSWU’s annual membership meeting in April.

Betty Birnbaum Hearsh, former art instructor, 84
Betty Birnbaum Hearsh, assistant in dress design in 1951 and instructor in design, art and fashion from 1964-1976, died Dec. 23, 2011. She was 84.
Longer Life Foundation grants to be awarded
The Longer Life Foundation is seeking applications for research funding in 2012. The group plans to fund four or five grants in 2012. Letters of Intent are due by Feb. 20.
Emergency medicine offers new fellowship
The Division of Emergency Medicine is offering a
two-year fellowship designed to allow emergency medicine trainees and
others interested in clinical, translational or basic research careers
to develop the skills to become successful, independent investigators. The program, which is coordinated through the
Clinical Research Training Center, culminates in a master’s degree of
science in clinical investigation.
Washington People: David J. Murray
David J. Murray, MD, chose pediatric anesthesia as a way to gain the confidence that he could manage the very worst that might happen, no matter how bad it got. Now, he uses clinical simulation to help students and residents learn to confront emergencies.

Chazen, Career Center business development specialist, 37
Phillip Todd Chazen, a business development specialist in the Career Center at Washington University in St. Louis, died Jan. 26. He was 37.
