PB&Joy helps feed area’s hungry

The second annual PB&Joy food drive at Washington University in St. Louis yielded 4,686 pounds of food and $4,664 in monetary donations. The cumulative effort is enough to feed 2,338 people for a day, according to Operation Food Search estimates.

Washington People: Guillermo Rosas

Guillermo Rosas, PhD, an associate professor of political science, is developing sophisticated statistical models to examine complicated questions in a credible way. Much of his research hearkens back to his homeland in Mexico City, as he strives to infuse thoughtful analysis into the public dialogue.

A PLAN for your career

The PLAN worked, and now organizers of the Washington University in St. Louis Professional Leadership Academy & Network program are looking for a second group of participants, including staff from the School of Medicine. PLAN is a yearlong professional development program intended to help build participants’ leadership skills as well as provide WUSTL with a cadre of leaders who can contribute to university-wide initiatives and projects. Applications are due May 29.

Undergraduate research symposium Saturday, April 28

The Spring Undergraduate Research Symposium, set for Saturday, April 28, will feature 230 student presenters from a wide variety of disciplines. The full day of activities features a keynote address; presentation of the Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding Contributions to Undergraduate Research; talks by students; a poster session; colloquiums; and an international review conference on migration and identity. All events are being held in the Laboratory Sciences Building.

WUSTL English professor Carl Phillips wins LA Times Book Prize

Carl Phillips, professor of English in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, has won the 2011 Los Angeles Times Book Prize in poetry for Double Shadow, his most recent book of poetry. Phillips was one of 12 winners recognized during a ceremony April 20 at the University of Southern California.

During move-out, give unwanted items to Share Our Stuff (SOS)

WUSTL students: No room in the truck for the futon, extra boxes of macaroni or nearly new T-shirts during move-out? Instead of throwing those items away, donate them to Share Our Stuff (SOS). WUSTL’s SOS program seeks to reduce waste and share goods typically thrown away during on-campus and off-campus move-out with those in need in the St. Louis region. SOS hosts drop-off points at Danforth Campus residential areas and off-campus.

‘Perspectives Across the Aisle’ April 27

The Gephardt Institute for Public Service at Washington University in St. Louis will host a morning discussion with former Democratic Rep. Richard A. ‘Dick’ Gephardt and former Republican Sen. Christopher S. ‘Kit’ Bond at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 27, in Simon Hall Room 109. The two former legislators will engage students and faculty on the 2012 presidential and congressional Elections.

David Warren, MD, medical director for infection control at the School of Medicine and Barnes-Jewish Hospital, works diligently to prevent infections, but when they do occur, he pulls out all the stops to halt their spread. And in a world that is increasingly interconnected, Warren also must keep abreast of emerging global epidemics that have the potential to wreak havoc if there’s a local outbreak.

Brown School celebrates ‘Everyday Heroes’ May 2

The Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis will award a Distinguished Faculty Award and three Distinguished Alumni Awards during its annual alumni awards celebration at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 2, at Steinberg Hall Auditorium. A reception will follow at the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum.
