About 150 volunteers still are needed this weekend for Service First. Through this annual community service project, WUSTL sends student, staff and faculty volunteers to help brighten public schools in St. Louis City and University City. Originally set for Sept. 1, with more than 1,000 volunteers participating, Service First was rescheduled due to inclement weather.

Chelsea Clinton announced during the annual Clinton Global Initiative meeting in New York on Sept. 25 that Washington University in St. Louis will serve as the host of the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U), April 5-7, 2013, on the Danforth Campus.  President Bill Clinton launched CGI U in 2007 to engage the next generation of leaders on college campuses around the world. Each year, CGI U hosts a meeting where students, youth organizations, topic experts, and celebrities discuss solutions to pressing global issues.

Health and human services organizations and programs are in constant growth and movement, and the need for effective evaluation of the impact of those initiatives in the community is greater than ever. The Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis, together with WUSTL’s Skandalaris Center for Entrepreneurial Studies and the Rome Group, will present a two-day summit, “Evaluation for Social Impact” Oct. 16 and 17 at the studios of the Nine Network in midtown St. Louis.​

Members of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra and Washington University student musicians will perform Monday, Sept. 24, outside of the Bear’s Den on the lower level of the South 40 House.

It’s common for School of Medicine employees to work here for 20 or more years. But it’s less common to meet an employee who has been here since she was 15 years old. That employee is Rhonda Matt, director of research and business operations for the Department of Pediatrics.

Two topics often avoided in “polite conversation” will be the buzz in the room as the John C. Danforth Center on Religion & Politics hosts an open house from 5-7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24, in its new Umrath Hall location. The celebration offers the community a chance to meet new faculty, mingle with center staff and get an update on recent progress.

Marilyn Gibbons, a lab technician at The Genome Institute, died of cancer Aug. 3, 2012. She was 51.

The Center for Research in Economics and Strategy (CRES) at Olin Business School is hosting two special events with Kathryn Shaw, PhD, the Ernest C. Arbuckle Professor of Economics at the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University. Shaw is the 2012 CRES Distinguished Woman in Economics and Strategy. She will present two lectures during her visit to Olin, Sept. 27 and 28.

Beginning Thursday, Sept. 20, and running through the week of the national election, the Gephardt Institute for Public Service is offering “Issues and Ideas: Election 2012,” a series of evening panel discussions on a wide range of political issues and topics.

Olin Business School has been named to the 2013 list of Military Friendly Schools released by GI Jobs magazine. The list honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools in the country that are doing the most to embrace America’s military service members, veterans, and spouses as students and ensure their success on campus.
