Edward Geltman, MD, professor of medicine, has been named the first recipient of the Philip A. Ludbrook Award. The award will be given annually to a member of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) for outstanding service and dedication to the protection of human subjects involved in research.

Otha L. Overholt, 71, who worked at Washington University for nearly 37 years, died at her home in Kirkwood, Mo., on Friday, Nov. 16, 2012. Overholt began as a technical specialist in the Office of Computing and Communications in 1971 and retired in 2008 as associate director of Computing and Communications.

Less than a month after national elections, veteran political journalist George Will delivers the fall keynote lecture for the John C. Danforth Center on Religion & Politics. His talk, “Religion and Politics in the First Modern Nation,” begins at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, in Graham Chapel.

And every year, John F. DiPersio, MD, PhD, chief of the Division of Oncology, looks out over the audience and marvels. From the lab to the clinic, DiPersio’s work is guided by his commitment to his patients. ​​

​The 15th annual WU Campus Store Faculty and Staff Appreciation Event will be 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, at the store in Mallinckrodt Center. Faculty and staff will receive a 30 percent discount on most items (apparel, gifts, books, supplies).

The Gephardt Institute for Public Service is accepting nominations for the Civic Scholars Program, which recognizes undergraduate students who exemplify future potential for civic leadership. Information sessions for interested students are scheduled for 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, and 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, at the Gephardt Institute for Public Service in Danforth University Center, Room 340.

Nov. 12-16 is Geography Awareness Week at WUSTL. The Geographic Information Systems office at WUSTL is sponsoring a number of sessions highlighting resources available through the university. Attendees can learn how to organize, analyze and present spatial information.
