Semester Online is a first-of-its-kind program offering rigorous online courses for credit from prestigious colleges and universities, including Washington University in St. Louis. Students can learn more about this program from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Mallinckrodt Center lobby and from 6-8p.m. in the Bear’s Den on Aug. 24 and 25. The deadline for applying for Semester Online courses is Aug. 26.

Frédéric Moynier, PhD, associate professor of earth and planetary sciences in Arts & Sciences, has been named the recipient of the 2013 Hisashi Kuno award given by the American Geophysical Union. The award is given annually to recognize the scientific accomplishments of junior scientists who make outstanding contributions to the fields of volcanology, geochemistry and petrology.

Shelly Sakiyama-Elbert, PhD, has been elected to the Biomedical Engineering Society Class of 2013 Fellows. Sakiyama-Elbert, professor and associate chair of biomedical engineering, was one of seven elected to the class. Fellows are selected for demonstrating exceptional achievements and experience in the biomedical engineering field and for their membership and participation in the society.

Lihong Wang, PhD, will receive the 2014 IEEE Biomedical Engineering Award, the highest honor conferred by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in this field. Wang, the Gene K. Beare Distinguished Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis, was selected for his pioneering contributions to the field of photoacoustic tomography, a novel imaging technology he developed that uses light and sound to measure change.

The Midwest Society for Developmental Biology will hold its 51st annual meeting Sept. 26-28 at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. 

As part of Washington University’s ongoing commitment to providing a safe and secure environment for university employees and students, the university is offering workplace safety training sessions. The one-hour free training class for employees and students will be offered six times this fall semester, starting Monday, Aug. 19. 

A shuttle service that provides rides home to School of Medicine students and employees has been expanded to include the Central West End.

The School of Medicine’s Division of Biology and Biomedical Sciences (DBBS) will celebrate its 40th anniversary Wednesday, Aug. 21. The division also will honor 10 faculty members who have served on more than 100 DDBS PhD thesis committees.

University of Michigan IT innovator John Gohsman will serve as Washington University’s first chief information officer. During his 30-year career, Gohsman found new ways to use information technology to help in the classroom and labratory.

The Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum at Washington University in St. Louis will institute new public hours beginning Aug. 21, 2013.
