​David M. Becker, JD, Joseph H. Zumbalen Professor of the Law of Property Emeritus, will be honored during a ceremony Nov. 14 with a $25,000 tribute from the Elizabeth Hurlock Beckman Award Trust for motivating a former student to make a difference in his or her community.​

Andrew Flachs, a sociocultural anthropology graduate student in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, has been awarded the Political Ecology Society Eric Wolf Prize for the best article-length paper based in substantive field research that makes an innovative contribution to political ecology.

Mike Dyer, supervisor of the greenhouse on the campus of Washington University in St. Louis, has the job many of us probably wish we had —  but only because we think he spends the day pottering around watering plants. Instead, his job requires everything from the mechanical and engineering skills needed to suppress the greenhouse’s voracious appetite for energy; extensive knowledge of insects; and the ability to grow any plant he is handed under the conditions specified. It’s not exactly relaxing, but he enjoys it that way.

The National Digital Stewardship Alliance has awarded “Documenting Ferguson,” an initiative of Washington University Libraries,​ a 2015 Innovation Award​.

Ann M. Gronowski, PhD, a professor of pathology and immunology and of obstetrics and gynecology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, presented a poster on the Women and Infants Health Specimen Consortium at this year’s American Association for Clinical Chemistry meeting.

Three people from Washington University in St. Louis have been appointed to the Missouri Supreme Court’s newly formed Racial and Ethnic Fairness Commission. They are: Kimberly Norwood, JD; Geetha Sant, JD; and Karen Tokarz, JD.

Jonathan M. Green, MD, associate dean for human studies and executive chair of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at Washington University, has been appointed to the Secretary’s Advisory Committee on Human Research Protections (SACHRP) within the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. He will serve a three-year term.

John A. Wright, PhD, author and historian, will speak at the 20th annual Homer G. Phillips Public Health Lecture Series at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis on Oct. 23. The title of his talk is “Homer G. Phillips and the Ville: Celebrating the Legacy.”

The American Society of Anesthesiologists has named Evan D. Kharasch, MD, PhD, of the School of Medicine, the new editor-in-chief of the journal Anesthesiology. Kharasch will assume the role of editor-in-chief-elect on Jan. 1, 2016, and then officially take on full editorial responsibility July 1.
